Do You Really Need a Bassinet (Carry Cot) for Your Pram?

Spend a day at a baby expo and you start to notice a pattern. Parents come up, explore the pram, test how it folds… and then pause at the bassinet.

That’s when the question comes up:
“Do I actually need this, or can I just use a capsule?”

It’s a fair question.

Capsules are convenient. They click in and out of the car, and they make quick trips feel easy. But when it comes to longer outings, like going for a walk, meeting friends, or sitting down at a café, they’re not designed for extended use.

And that’s where a bassinet (or carry cot) really comes into its own.

What’s the difference between a capsule and a bassinet?

Both have their place. But they’re built for very different situations. A capsule is designed for travel in the car. A bassinet is designed for sleep, comfort, and longer periods in the pram.

That difference matters more than it might seem at first. When your baby is in a capsule, they’re in a slightly upright position. That’s necessary for safety in the car, but it’s not ideal for long stretches of time.

A bassinet, on the other hand, allows your baby to lie completely flat. And that changes everything.

Why lying flat matters for your baby

Newborns spend a lot of their time sleeping. It’s how they grow, develop, and recover from… well, being brand new to the world. A flat position supports:

  • Natural spine development
  • Open airways for easier breathing
  • More comfortable, deeper sleep

Health organisations, including the KidsHealth NZ, recommend that babies lie flat on their backs for sleep, as it helps keep airways open and reduces unnecessary strain on their body.

Capsules are great when you need them. But they’re not made for naps that stretch beyond short periods.

A bassinet is.

Real life looks different than quick car trips

This is the part that often gets overlooked. It’s easy to imagine using a capsule for everything. Until you’re actually out in the world.

You go for a walk.
You stop for lunch.
Your baby falls asleep.

And suddenly, what was meant to be a quick trip turns into a couple of hours. That’s when comfort really matters. In a capsule, your baby is more restricted. There’s less room to move, less airflow, and a more upright position.

In a bassinet, they have space to stretch, breathe, and settle into proper sleep. It’s the difference between a quick nap… and real rest.

Why airflow and ventilation matter more than you think

New Zealand weather can be unpredictable, but one thing is consistent, it can get warm quickly. Good airflow isn’t just a “nice feature”. It plays a big role in your baby’s comfort. A well-designed bassinet allows:

  • Air to circulate freely around your baby
  • Heat to escape instead of building up
  • A more stable, comfortable sleep environment

Research around safe sleep environments (including guidance from organisations like Red Nose Australia) highlights the importance of keeping babies cool and well ventilated during sleep.

That’s where bassinets have a clear advantage over capsules, especially on longer outings.

A closer look at the Carry Cot 3

This is exactly what we had in mind when designing the Carry Cot 3. It’s not just about having a place for your baby to lie flat. It’s about creating a space where they can actually rest properly, wherever you are.

Here’s what makes it different:

  • Fully breathable, ventilated mesh sides for warmer weather
  • Multiple ventilation points and a peekaboo window on the canopy
  • Easy to clip on and off your pram or Homestand without disturbing your baby
  • Suitable from newborn up to 9kg (or until they can pull themselves up)

Inside, you’ll find NudeFibre natural fabric on the mattress and lining.
No added dyes. No unnecessary chemicals. Just a breathable, durable material that’s gentle on delicate skin.

And for those long days out, the canopy and apron are UPF50+ DOPE dyed, so they hold their colour even under the harsh New Zealand sun.

It’s designed for the Oscar Nu, and also compatible with Oscar M and Olive strollers.

What if you don’t have a bassinet?

Not every setup looks the same, and that’s okay.

If you’re not using a bassinet, some parents choose to use a newborn insert cushion with their pram seat to help create a more supportive, flatter position in those early months.

It can be a helpful option for shorter outings or when you want a bit more flexibility. That said, it’s still a different experience to a full bassinet.

A bassinet gives your baby more space to move, better airflow around their body, and a dedicated sleep environment that’s designed specifically for longer periods.

It’s not about replacing the capsule

This isn’t about choosing one over the other. Most parents end up using both, just at different times.

  • Capsule for short car trips and quick errands
  • Bassinet for walks, outings, and anything that lasts longer

They solve different problems. But if you’re planning to spend time out and about with your newborn, having a bassinet option makes a big difference.

Final thoughts

There are a lot of decisions to make when you’re preparing for a baby. Some feel big. Some feel small. And some, like this one, don’t seem that important at first.

But once you’re out there, living it day to day, you start to notice what actually helps. A bassinet isn’t about ticking a box or adding another item to your list.

It’s giving your baby a space where they can rest properly.
Where they can stretch out.
Where they can just be comfortable.

And sometimes, that’s exactly what you both need.
