Styling Q&A with NZ Mum Tyla-Jean

Tell us a little bit about yourself and who is in your family?

My partner, George, and I met four years ago and fell pregnant with our daughter, Lily, only a few short months after dating! However we knew we wanted to be together. We went on to buy our first home in 2018.

We needed some company for our little girl so decided to get two Rottweilers, Frankie and Simon (my partner named them!) When we decided to start trying for our second child it definitely wasn't as easy as our first. We had a miscarriage just before we found out we were blessed with our rainbow boy Finn!

How would you describe your style?

I definitely feel as though I have a very neutral/boheme style! I do love a little bit of white and beige, everything in my home is like this. It makes styling so much easier when everything matches.

If wanting some colour it's easy to pop in a few decor accents with colour or a few accessories to tie everything together!

Do you have any advice for styling kids’ rooms on a budget?

When I began to style Finns room, I looked at things I loved on Pinterest and created a mood board of the sort of things I loved!

As I started to collect things for his nursery I noticed the majority of the items came with quite a large price tag! I looked at a wooden rainbow and it was $84.00 - there was no way I would spend that kind of money, especially knowing how much and what I wanted.

So I started to find little alternatives that I could get creative with. I found a Kmart rainbow for $9.00 and painted it myself different shades of green which fit right in to his room.

When styling a nursery make sure you keep it practical, you're going to spend a lot of time in there! We made sure we had a designated changing station, enough wardrobe space, some drawer dividers to make it easy when choosing an outfit and a comfy chair that I can sit in when I'm feeding!

You were sent the SnuzKot Cot Bed, SnuzSurface Mattress, and Sheet Set to use with your newest addition. What are your first thoughts of the SnuzKot Skandi Collection?

I absolutely love it, so easy to put together, so stylish and practical!

The SnuzKot Cot Bed transforms from a cot to a toddler bed to a junior bed, and lasts from 0-10 years (with bed extension kit). Do you have any tips on how to make a room more “mature” or transition from baby to toddler to “big kid”?

When I move Finn into a more neutral space, I'm going to remove some of the baby toys like the rainbow and toy stackers and add practical items for him for every day use.

As he starts getting older I'll make his decor suit him and his personality, e.g. putting a surfboard up in a corner or having a display of skateboards (if that's what he's into.)

You have a little girl and a baby boy. Do you have any tips on how to style a room when you’re keeping the gender a surprise?

Keep everything neutral coloured.

I kept our nursery somewhat gender neutral, I never had anything colour in it what so ever so that when babe was born I could add a splash of 'gender' tones. For Finn I've gone a teal/turquoise colour and brown, for Lily I've gone peach and nude! It's so easy to get things which suit both genders.

Any final comments?

The thing I love most about the SnuzKot is it's going to grow with Finn, no unfarmiliar beds, or conversion toddler bed; he's going to remain in the same bed right up to a single bed! It's important to keep it familiar for him.
